Virginia Beach Demolition Co

Asbestos Survey & Abatement CoordinationVirginia Beach, VA

Sequencing the asbestos inspection, state notification and licensed abatement ahead of demolition.

We are a demolition contractor, not a licensed asbestos abatement firm. What we do is coordinate: make sure the survey is done, the right notification is filed, licensed specialists remove regulated material and clearance is documented before demolition resumes.

In Virginia, asbestos work involves a few different bodies. Federal NESHAP rules apply to demolition and renovation, the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry administers the demolition and renovation notification, and the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation licenses inspectors, project designers and abatement contractors. The City of Virginia Beach has its own expectations at permit time, so the pieces need to be lined up in the right order.

How the Work Is Sequenced

  1. Order the survey early

The inspection is the first dependency, so we ask for it at the start of the job; results shape the budget and the schedule.

  2. Read the results and plan

If asbestos is present, the abatement scope, notification and sequencing are mapped out with the owner and the licensed contractor.

  3. File the notification

The notification for regulated demolition goes to VDOLI with the required lead time; confirm requirements with the agency for your project.

  4. Abate before demolition

The licensed abatement contractor removes regulated material; we hold off any activity that could disturb it.

  5. Clear and proceed

After documented clearance, we continue with demolition and keep the paperwork in the project file.

Safety & Compliance

Rules, thresholds and fees change. Use these as a checklist of what to confirm, and rely on the issuing agency for current requirements.

NESHAP (40 CFR Part 61, Subpart M)

Federal rule covering demolition and renovation work involving asbestos, including inspection and notification requirements.

Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (VDOLI)

Administers the demolition and renovation notification in Virginia; confirm current requirements with the agency.

Virginia DPOR licensing

Asbestos inspectors, project designers and abatement contractors must be licensed through the Board for Asbestos, Lead, and Home Inspectors.

OSHA asbestos standard for construction (29 CFR 1926.1101)

Protects workers during any work that can disturb asbestos-containing material.

City of Virginia Beach permit review

The Permits and Inspections Division may ask for proof of the asbestos steps at permit time; confirm for your address.

Virginia Beach Considerations

Local note 1

Older Oceanfront hotels and motels often have layers of finishes from multiple renovation cycles, so the inspector may find different materials on different floors.

Local note 2

Mid-century houses in neighborhoods such as Bayside and parts of Great Neck can contain materials like flooring, mastics and cement products that are worth testing before teardown.

Local note 3

Because abatement and notification lead times set the earliest possible start, we recommend the survey go out well before a closing, lease start or construction mobilization date.

Asbestos Survey & Abatement Coordination FAQs

No. We coordinate. Abatement is performed by a Virginia-licensed contractor, and we sequence our work around theirs.

Federal rules require a thorough inspection before regulated demolition or renovation. Whether your project is regulated depends on scope and building type; confirm with VDOLI.

Licensed abatement, notification where required and clearance come before demolition. We lay out the sequence and the effect on schedule.

That is set by the contract and the rules. We confirm who is responsible and put it in writing so nothing is missed.
