Driveways, carport pads, patios, garage slabs and old pool decks are among the most common requests we hear about, whether the house stays or comes down. The work looks simple. The details that decide cost are thickness, steel, access and where the material is allowed to go.

Typical sequence

  • Locate first: Gas, water, irrigation and electric service often run beneath or beside flatwork. Request locates through Virginia811 and ask how private lines will be traced.
  • Saw cut the boundary: Cutting a clean line keeps the break-out from reaching concrete you plan to keep, such as a sidewalk or a neighbor's apron.
  • Break and separate: Hydraulic breakers and buckets fracture the slab. Wire mesh and rebar are separated for scrap, and base material is checked for contamination.
  • Load and haul: Pieces are loaded and trucked to a facility that accepts them. Haul distance changes the price more than most people expect.

Local conditions that matter

Coastal Virginia soils are often sandy and the water table is shallow. Heavy equipment can rut yards quickly after rain, and broken slabs sometimes sit in standing water. Ask the contractor how they will protect lawn, irrigation heads and storm drains, and whether they plan to schedule around wet spells.

Where the debris goes

Clean concrete can often be crushed and reused as aggregate; mixed construction debris generally goes to a permitted landfill or transfer facility serving the region. Facilities set their own acceptance rules, fees and hours, so have the contractor name the destination and ask for weight tickets. Disposal of anything suspected to contain asbestos is a separate matter and should follow the asbestos process.

Near water or storm drains

If the slab is close to a tidal shoreline, a canal or a Resource Protection Area buffer, ask the city whether land-disturbance or buffer rules apply before any breaking starts. Concrete dust and slurry should stay out of drainage paths.
